Algeria will launch bidding for 1 GW of renewable capacity this summer. The tender, which is expected in June or July, will be divided into ten lots of 100 MW each and will allow projects with foreign financing.

Another three rounds of bidding for the same capacity each are expected to be held annually between 2022 and 2024, according to a report by pv magazine.

Algeria aims for 22 GW of renewables capacity by 2030

The Algerian government plans to deploy a total of 22 GW of clean energy generation capacity by 2030, at least 13.6 GW of which would be solar.

The government earlier announced plans to develop a 4 GW solar field by 2024

In 2020, the country’s government announced plans to develop a 4 GW solar field by 2024. The project, called Tafouk 1, was valued at between USD 3.2 billion and USD 3.6 billion. Tafouk 1 would consist of several solar power plants.

The government said at the time the project would allow Algeria to position itself on the international market, in addition to meeting national demand for energy and preserving its fossil resources.
